The world didn't end in a fiery boom or rush of newly melted tides, it ended with the sound of a tiny, inconsequential virus. To get away from the plague, people rushed away from the densely populated parts of the continent, and into The West.
Flash forward two hundred years, and they've never left. The chaos of the world plague has dashed the world back to the way it was in the wild west era. The lucky pen themselves up in the mountains while the new military state tries to keep the still roaring plague at bay in the lowlands.
Some are okay with living under the tyrannous heel of The Union, some rebel against it, and others consider themselves above it. The world is split into factions, the Highborn, The Lowborn, Turncoats, Law, and the Lawless. Where do you lie?
FACTIONS:
The Highborn:
The people who are born into the cushy arms of rich parents and secreted away up in the mountain cities. These people horded the most technology away and thus have the longest lifespans.
Truthfully, they don't want to set foot outside of their cities. They're all dreadfully scared of the plague and of the uncouth people living in the lowlands. They're fine with just sending the military down to deal with them.
The Lowborn:
The supposedly unruly, heretical population of the lowlands. They've learned to fend where they can. They're generally not as educated as their higher cousins, but they do have a substantially higher chance of surviving the plauge... and there is that pesky rumor about plague survivors walking away with abnormal abilities...
The Law:
The Military is a well trained group of citizens of all rank and creed. This is the only way for a lowlander to make their way up into the mountain cities, and even then it's a long shot.
The local government is also a part of this, though they are much less intimidating than the military. There are a few appointed sheriffs, some well meaning, some not, but they rarely receive help from the central government and have to fend for themselves.
The Lawless:
These are the actual unruly, heretical people of the lowlands. Typically going by nicknames to guard their identity from people who would do them harm, they're the pirates of the land, and they live up to people's expectations. The Lawless are usually the dark hearted or the people who are not accepted anymore by even the lowlanders, mostly due to having had the plague at some point.
The Turncoats:
Neither side particularly wants them, so they make a career out of bouncing gleefully back and forth between sides. They'll work for a penny, but they're just as likely to kill you after they get it. This highly unorganized faction is mostly a group of mercenaries and Bounty Hunters.
Don't you think it's time for a little civil disobedience?
